An amber wildfire alert has been issued across Dorset and Wiltshire. Fire crews warn dry conditions mean fires could spread quickly. People are being urged to avoid barbecues and open flames in the countryside.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has issued an amber wildfire alert across the region.

The warning means that if a fire starts, it could spread rapidly due to dry ground and vegetation.

The risk is highest on open land such as heathlands, fields and cliffs.

Fire crews say there have already been several heath fires this year, some believed to have been started deliberately.

Group Manager Graham Kewley is urging people to take extra care when outdoors.

Advice includes avoiding barbecues and campfires, properly disposing of cigarettes and reporting any fires immediately.

Members of the public are also being reminded not to attempt to tackle large fires themselves.

Officials say early reporting can help prevent small fires from becoming major incidents.
