Preparations are underway for an archaeological dig in Weymouth town centre. The excavation will take place at the former Weymouth Bowl site in St Nicholas Street. Archaeologists are asking residents to share old photographs of the surrounding streets. The images could help identify features uncovered during the dig. Dorset Council says the work will begin soon.

Preparations are underway for an archaeological dig at the former Weymouth Bowl site.

Dorset Council says excavation work has begun at the location on St Nicholas Street as archaeologists start investigating the historic area as part of work taking place on the site.

The dig will be carried out by archaeologists from Context One Heritage and Archaeology, who will examine the ground for historical remains and features that could reveal more about the town’s past.

Researchers are asking residents to help by sharing old photographs connected to St Nicholas Street, West Street or the former Theatre Royal, which once stood in the same part of Weymouth.

The team say the photographs could help them identify structures or details uncovered during the excavation and provide useful context about how the area looked in the past.

Dorset Council says the archaeological work forms part of preparations taking place at the former Weymouth Bowl site ahead of future development plans.
