A major £32 million tourist attraction on Portland has been given a significant boost after securing £20 million in government funding.

The Portland MEMO project is planned for the former Jordans Mine and Bowers Quarry site. It will transform the area into an exhibition and visitor centre focused on the planet’s biodiversity and geological history, with a strong emphasis on the Jurassic Coast.

The development is expected to create around 100 full-time jobs, along with a further 500 indirect roles linked to the project.

The funding announcement was made by Chancellor Rachel Reeves, with hopes the attraction will provide a major lift to the local leisure and hospitality sectors. Once open, it is projected to attract around 350,000 visitors each year.
