The MP for South Dorset has voiced support for Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer as pressure mounts from Labour MPs calling on him to resign.
Lloyd Hatton has urged Labour MPs to support Prime Minister Keir Starmer amid growing divisions within the party over his leadership.
It comes after three ministers reportedly resigned and more than 80 Labour MPs called for Sir Keir to step down, while another group of MPs warned against launching a leadership contest.
Mr Hatton said Britain was facing a number of major challenges, including conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, pressure from the cost of living crisis, and what he described as “the complete mess” left by the previous Conservative government.
He said: “All MPs need to give the Prime Minister the time and support to tackle these significant challenges head-on.
“Now is not the time to turn inwards or allow for a political soap opera to take centre stage.”
Downing Street said the Prime Minister told Cabinet colleagues that Labour has a formal process for leadership challenges “and that has not been triggered”, adding that the public expects the government to “get on with governing”.
