Thousands of young people in the Weymouth area have been given antibiotics and vaccines after three cases of meningitis. Health officials say the response has helped prevent further spread.

Thousands of students across Weymouth, Portland and Chickerell have received urgent protection against Meningitis B.

The меры were introduced after three young people in the area contracted the disease in recent weeks.

Dorset HealthCare led a rapid response, working with UK Health Security Agency to roll out antibiotics and vaccinations to students in years 7 to 13.

Clinics were held in schools including Budmouth Academy and Wey Valley Academy, alongside additional evening sessions.

So far, more than 4,300 doses of antibiotics have been given, with nearly 4,100 vaccinations completed.

Health officials say there have been no further cases and those affected are recovering, but are urging anyone eligible who has not yet come forward to attend remaining clinics.

Symptoms of meningitis can include fever, headache, vomiting and a rash that does not fade under pressure, and urgent medical attention should be sought if it is suspected.
