A London Marathon fundraiser inspired by a family dementia diagnosis has already raised more than £3,100 for Alzheimer’s Society.
Amelia Ellen Stocker is preparing to run the 26.2-mile event on 26 April, saying she wanted to support the charity after her great grandad was diagnosed with vascular dementia last September. She says the family has faced difficult changes since then, with his condition declining quickly and care support now in place.
Her parents, local businessman Richard Stocker and her mother, said they are both proud of Amelia for taking on the challenge and supporting an important cause close to the family.
Writing on her JustGiving page, Amelia said being at university nearly three hours from home had made the situation harder, as she has tried to spend as much time with him as possible.
She said her great grandad has shown real strength by surpassing an earlier six-month prognosis given in January. Amelia added that her family lives with uncertainty over how his health may change.
She wrote that the marathon is not only about crossing the finish line, but also about “raising awareness, raising hope” and helping create a future where dementia no longer affects so many families.
From every one at AIR we wish you well this weekend.
