A wildlife watching building is expected to be approved for the Chesil Beach centre today (Monday 8th).
A Dorset Council planning meeting is being recommended granting planning permission for a new bird and wildlife viewing building next to the Wild Chesil Centre at the southern end of The Fleet Lagoon near Ferry Bridge.
The proposal would see the existing bin store removed and replaced with a new bird and wildlife hide and a replacement refuse bin store.
The plans show a bird hide with three large windows overlooking The Fleet Lagoon, along with timber access steps, an access ramp and a pedestrian entrance. External walls would be finished in vertical timber cladding, while the shallow mono-pitch roof would be covered in dark grey material.
Planning officers, recommending approval, said the proposal would improve accessibility, with the access ramp designed to make the bird hide easier to use for people with disabilities or mobility impairments, as well as visitors with pushchairs. In their report, they said the development would help reduce barriers to accessing the natural environment and support wider participation in recreational and educational activities.
The proposed building has been described as modest in scale and subordinate to the existing centre. Planning officers said it would sit within an established cluster of buildings associated with the visitor centre and would not extend development into previously undeveloped parts of the coastline.
They added that the timber walls and dark grey roof would help the structure blend into the landscape and would not harm the character of the Dorset and East Devon Coast World Heritage Site or the West Dorset Heritage Coast.
In their conclusion, officers said the scheme would deliver public benefits by enhancing the visitor offer, improving access to nature-based recreation and supporting sustainable tourism. They said no adverse impacts had been identified that would outweigh those benefits, and recommended that planning permission should be granted subject to conditions.
