Dorset Council has reported its first budget underspend since becoming a unitary authority in 2019.

Dorset Council says it ended the 2025/26 financial year broadly on budget, with a £169,000 underspend from a total budget of £417 million.

It is the first time the council has spent less than planned overall since it was formed in 2019.

A report going to Cabinet on June 23 says the improved position follows tighter financial controls, stronger leadership and action to manage spending pressures.

The council says its overall financial risk rating has reduced from high to medium, while reserves have strengthened.

Its capital programme has also been reviewed, with stalled projects removed and investment focused on schemes ready to be delivered.

Planned projects include improvements to roads, coastal defences, school facilities, transport links and community buildings across Dorset.
