One of Weymouth’s best‑preserved Georgian seafront buildings could be converted back into a private home from its current guesthouse use.
The proposal, ( P/FUL/2026/02539), is for 17 The Esplanade, now known as Bayliss Hall.
The Grade II‑listed property forms part of whar is described as a distinguished terrace of homes built between 1810 and 1815, positioned between Alexandra Gardens and Custom House Quay.
The building sits within the Esplanade Conservation Area and is described in planning documents as a “classic Georgian family house.”
According to a planning agent, surveyors believe the structure has remained largely unchanged in appearance for more than 200 years. The agent adds that the proposal involves no alterations to the building’s design or access, arguing that restoring it to a single dwelling would return it to its “original intended purpose.”
The application seeks to change the use of the property from a guesthouse to a private home, with the submitted application form indicating it would become a four‑plus‑bedroom home if approved. No material changes to the fabric of the building are planned, according to the application.
The applicant is listed as Mr Jon Wyer, who gives an address in Kingston upon Thames.
The public consultation period for the proposal remains open until 13 June.
